igneous rock formed at the surface of the
Earth. It is usually fine-grained, unlike the
more coarse-grained intrusive (under the
surface) types of igneous rocks. Volcanic
rock can be either lava (solidified magma) or
a pyroclastic deposit (fragmentary lava or
ash) such as tuff (volcanic ash that has
fused to form rock). Basalt and andesite are
the main types of lava. Rhyolite often occurs
as a pyroclastic deposit.
